During a plumbing failure, protect people first, then limit damage if you can do so safely. Do not enter a flooded area where water may be in contact with electrical installations.

1. Stop the supply if safe

Close a local or main valve only if you can reach it without danger. Do not force a seized valve. If shared plumbing is affected, notify the building representative or manager.

2. Watch for electrical danger

Do not touch wet appliances, sockets or switches. Turn off electricity only from an accessible, dry and safe location. If approaching the electrical panel is unsafe, move away and request professional help; call 112 in immediate danger.

3. Limit the spread of water

If there is no electrical or other danger, move documents and belongings and place a container or towels. Do not stand beneath a bulging ceiling or try to puncture it. Avoid contact with water you suspect is contaminated with sewage.

4. Respond to the type of fault

  • Burst pipe: isolating the water matters more than improvised patching. Do not dismantle a pressurised pipe.
  • Blocked drain or toilet: stop using the affected drain and do not flush again. Do not add chemicals or mix cleaners.
  • Water heater: do not open the casing. If safe, stop using it according to the appliance instructions. If you smell gas, leave and call 0800 400 400 from outside; for a CO alarm or immediate danger, call 112.

5. Record the situation

Photograph damage only from a safe place. Note when it began, the leak location, steps taken and any cleaning products used. Keep this information for the plumber and insurer.

6. Prepare for arrival

Give the exact address, contact details and access instructions. Say whether the water is off and whether electrical installations are affected. Clear a safe path to the fault and wait for the professional. Having towels, a container and a known valve location is more useful than attempting a risky repair.
