5 signs of hidden water leaks

A hidden leak can develop inside a wall, beneath a floor or behind fittings. The following signs warrant investigation, but do not by themselves confirm a leaking supply pipe: condensation, a roof or a drain may also cause dampness.

1. Unexpectedly higher consumption

Compare water-meter readings and bills while accounting for changes in your household. If all outlets are off but the meter still records usage, a leak or an appliance drawing water unnoticed may be responsible. Check the toilet cistern too.

2. Stains and peeling surfaces

New ceiling stains, peeling paint or loose tiles indicate moisture that needs investigation. Photograph changes and note whether they appear after showering, rain or use of a particular tap.

3. Water sounds when nothing is running

Hissing or dripping when nobody is using water can be a clue. In an apartment building, sound can also travel from neighbouring pipes, so an inspection is needed before opening a wall.

4. Distorted or soft floors

Raised parquet, swollen fittings or a soft floor require prompt assessment. Avoid placing weight on a surface you suspect is weakened, and do not go beneath a damaged ceiling.

5. Persistent damp odour

A musty smell may indicate moisture trapped in a concealed space. Covering or painting a surface will not remove the source of the problem.

What should you do?

For an active leak, close the valve only if you can reach it safely. Stay clear of water near electrical installations. Notify a plumber and, if shared pipes are affected, the building representative. A professional may choose moisture measurements or other locating methods; opening a surface is sometimes still necessary. Keep photographs and consumption records for diagnosis and insurance.
