A successful bathroom renovation brings together layout, plumbing, waterproofing and finishing work. Before selecting tiles, check what the existing space and drainage allow.

1. Plan and needs

Write down the desired shower, toilet and basin layout, storage requirements and total budget. Consider accessibility, slip-resistant surfaces and your household's future needs. Moving drains can substantially change the scope of work.

2. Materials and fittings

Choose tiles suitable for wet areas, compatible waterproofing systems and fittings with available replacement parts. Check dimensions, maintenance access to the cistern and valves, and delivery dates before demolition begins.

3. Preparation and removal

Contractors should safely isolate water and electrical installations, protect the rest of the apartment and arrange waste removal. Once fittings have been removed, the substrate and any moisture damage can be inspected. Concealed defects may require a revised plan.

4. Water, drainage and electricity

New supply and waste pipes must suit the layout and expected demand. A professional determines sizes and gradients for the actual conditions. An electrician checks protection and equipment positioning relative to wet areas. Installations should be tested and photographed before being concealed.

5. Waterproofing and finishes

Substrate preparation, joints, penetrations and drains form part of a complete waterproofing system. Follow manufacturer instructions for compatibility and drying times. Tiles and silicone alone do not replace properly installed waterproofing.

6. Handover

Check joints, drainage, cistern operation and valve access. Request test records where applicable, invoices, warranties and maintenance instructions. Use the room only after the materials' required drying times have passed.

How should you budget?

Compare quotations covering the same scope: removal, installations, waterproofing, tiling, fittings, assembly and final cleaning. Agree how unexpected work will be approved and allow a contingency appropriate to the room's condition. A general price per bathroom without an inspection is not a reliable quotation.
